Who to inform when moving into a nursing home

Moving into a care home is a big change and there are several people and organisations that you will need to inform. Notifying your family and friends is a good start, as they will be able to offer you the support that you need before, during and after your move.

However, there are other key people and organisations that you should inform when moving into a care home:

Benefits

If you are receiving benefits and are moving into a nursing home, your benefits may be affected. The type of benefits you receive and the amount you receive may change.

For example, if you are receiving housing benefits prior to your move, these payments will usually stop. It’s important to inform all relevant benefit agencies of your move.

Updating your financial and legal paperwork

Before moving into a care home, you may need to sort through your financial and legal paperwork to ensure that everything is in order. This may include updating your will, power of attorney and any other legal paperwork that is important to you.

Doctors

It’s important to inform your doctors of your new address and that you will be moving into a care home. They may also need to share your medical history with your new home to ensure that you receive the best possible care.

Utility companies

You should inform any utility companies such as gas, water and electric, to arrange the cancellation or transfer of their services.

Banks and other financial agencies

You should inform your bank and any other financial agencies of your change of address and any changes to your payment agreements.

Post office

To ensure that all post is directed to your new address, you should inform the post office of your move into the care home.

DVLA

If you hold a driving licence, you must inform the DVLA of your change of address.

Subscriptions & service providers

Any subscription services, such as magazines or newspapers, should be informed. You should also inform other service providers such as your internet or mobile phone provider.

Insurance companies & other service providers

You should inform your insurance companies, such as your home insurance or life insurance, of your change of address.

Moving into a nursing home | A guide for families

Here at Jackman’s Lodge, we understand the concerns and worries that our residents may have been before they move into our beautiful care home. To ease your mind, we’ve put together everything you need to know before you prepare to move.

Deciding what to take with you

One of the biggest challenges of moving into a care home is deciding what to take with you. Many people have been living in their homes for years and have accumulated a lot of belongings during this time. While you won’t be able to take everything with you, it’s important to think carefully about what items you want to bring with you to your new home.

Start by making a list of your favourite items, such as family photographs. These are the things that will make your room feel like home and remind you of the people closest to you. You may also want to bring some practical items, such as a reading lamp, that will make your room feel comfortable and like yours.

Clothing items for different weather

Something to consider when moving into a care home is the clothing items you’ll need for different weather conditions and activities. This may include jumpers and coats for the winter, T-shirts for the summer and a raincoat for a rainy day.

At our Surrey care home, we also provide a wide range of care home activities for all of our elderly residents to enjoy. If you have a favourite outfit you’d like to wear for a cheese and wine evening or a trip to the local garden centre, make sure to bring it along.

Taking electrical items?

If you plan to bring any electrical items with you into a care home, such as a TV, radio or computer, it’s best to check with the care home first. Some care homes may need to run a test to check that they are safe to use in resident rooms. This is to ensure the safety of you and other residents. Before you pack your electrical items, make sure to give your care home a call and ask what their policy is.
